Kumbakonam (Kumba - pot; konam - bend) is famous for Mahamaham festival, occurs once in 12 years, just as Kumbamela of North It is an occasion of great religious and spiritual Importance. Kumbakonam is mentioned as, 'Thirukkudamooku' in Thevaram, at present it is called Kumbakonam. The Siva linga is slightly titled at the top towards left and hence the name Kumbakonam. In ancient times it is known as Baskara Shektra. It is also known as Temple City.
Thirunageshwaram temple is devoted to the planet Rahu, the ascending node of Moon. Rahu is described as a snake. The idol in this renowned temple is in the human form with serpent image at the back. The prime idol of Rahu is seen with his consort. The main deity is Lord Shiva. There is an attractive Parvathi shrine as well. The another temple is Sri Oppliyappan Kovil which is also known as chinna Tiruppathi.
Sooriyanar Temple is in East of Kumbakonam, Kumbakonam - Mayiladuthurai road. It is exactly 2Km to the north of Aduthurai and the temple is well connected from lower Anicut and Thiruppanandal. All the Passengers have to alight at Thirumangalagudi Kaliamman Koil bus stop and walk for two for long north east to reach the temple. This temple is in the banks of Cauvery in Thiruvidaimarudur Talulk which falls under Tanjore district known as Head Quarters of King Chola.
Thirumangalakudi is known as Panchamangala Kshetra. The name of the place is Mangalakudi. The Goddess is Mangalambika. The tower is Mangala Vimanam. The Holy Water is Mangala Theertham. The Vinayaka is Mangala Vinayaka. Everything in the temple is but Mangala – Prosperity. The Lord has three faces representing human, animal and birdis own forms, a rare one not found in other temples. Here, Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Protector, Sage Agasthya, Sun, Akashvani, Mother Earth worshipped the Lord.
